Hold onto your hats, Android enthusiasts! It seems the next iteration of our favorite mobile operating system has a sweet new codename: 'Cinnamon Bun'! This is big news, especially considering the twists and turns Android's codenaming conventions have taken recently. But here's where it gets interesting...
For years, Android followed a delicious alphabetical pattern, assigning dessert-themed names to each new version. Think 'Cupcake', 'Donut', 'Eclair', and 'Froyo' – a tasty journey all the way up to 'Vanilla Ice Cream' for Android 15. Then came Android 16, which threw us a curveball with the codename 'Baklava,' breaking the alphabetical sequence.
Now, it appears Google is ready to hop back on the alphabetical train. The whispers started back in August, but now, thanks to a report from Android Authority, we have confirmation: 'Cinnamon Bun' is the real deal! The codename was spotted in the core code of the latest Android Canary build, solidifying its place.
The report highlights that Google's November Android Canary release (build 2511) specifically lists CINNAMONBUN as a valid Android version, alongside previous builds like TIRAMISU, UPSIDEDOWNCAKE, and VANILLAICE_CREAM.
Currently, CINNAMON_BUN is assigned the version code 10000, which will eventually be updated to 37 to reflect the OS's API level. For context, Android 16/Baklava has version code 36. This change will happen once Android 17's features and APIs are finalized, and the OS reaches platform stability, which is expected in 2026.
What does this mean for you? While details about Android 17 are still emerging, one potential feature could allow you to see more from apps on your always-on display.
What do you think about the 'Cinnamon Bun' codename? Does it live up to the delicious legacy of Android names, or do you have a different favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments – let's get a conversation going!
