Ashes 2025: Australia's Squad for 1st Test | Konstas Dropped, Labuschagne Returns (2026)

Get ready for some Ashes drama! The battle for Australia's opening Test squad has just heated up.

In a surprising move, young batsman Sam Konstas has been dropped from the squad, making way for the experienced Marnus Labuschagne to make a comeback. And here's where it gets interesting: uncapped left-hander Jake Weatherald has also been handed his maiden call-up, creating an intriguing partnership possibility.

Australia's selection panel has certainly stirred up some controversy! With Konstas left out, the focus shifts to Weatherald, who has been in red-hot form, topping the run-scoring charts in the Sheffield Shield. His inclusion could see him partner Usman Khawaja when the first Test kicks off in Perth on November 21.

But here's where it gets controversial: Labuschagne, who was previously dropped during the West Indies series, is back in the mix. His return is a result of a prolific start to the domestic season for Queensland. The question now is, where will he bat? It all depends on whether Weatherald takes on the specialist opener role, as the selectors seem keen on clearly defined top-order positions.

Chief selector George Bailey had this to say: "The squad provides a good balance, and with 14 players set to feature in the next round of Sheffield Shield, we'll continue gathering valuable insights as we approach the first Test. We're excited for the group to come together and prepare in Perth after a busy domestic and white-ball schedule to start the summer."

In the absence of Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a lumbar stress injury, Steve Smith will lead the side. Cummins will travel with the squad, with hopes of returning for the Brisbane Test.

As for Australia's attack, expect to see Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon in action. Lyon returns after the selectors opted for an all-seam attack in Jamaica. Cameron Green and Beau Webster retain their spots, but it's unclear if both all-rounders will feature together again.

Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott are named as reserve quicks, with Doggett returning from a hip injury and Abbott maintaining his place after recent squad appearances. Notably, Michael Neser, despite an excellent start to the Shield season, has been left out, even after taking 11 wickets in two matches on batting-friendly surfaces.

Josh Inglis, the reserve wicketkeeper, also provides batting cover, having stepped in for the injured Smith at No. 4 in Barbados and keeping during Australia's last Test when Alex Carey was substituted due to concussion.

So, what do you think of Australia's squad selection? Are they making the right moves? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
