That's the feeling Azzi Fudd, a current UConn Husky, is experiencing as her friend and former teammate, Paige Bueckers, practices with the team. Bueckers, a recent WNBA sensation, is back in Storrs, Connecticut, adding a spark to the Huskies' practices. Bueckers' recent achievements are nothing short of phenomenal. In a whirlwind six months, she secured a national championship, earned a spot in the WNBA All-Star Game, was named WNBA Rookie of the Year, and made the All-WNBA Second Team.
Fudd, who still plays for UConn, shared her thoughts on Bueckers' return. "It's bittersweet," she said. "We miss having them here, but it's a lot of fun to have them back. The energy they bring makes the red team a lot better, and it gives us better competition."
But here's where it gets controversial... When you lose a player of Bueckers' caliber, who was also WNBA Rookie of the Year, it's a significant adjustment. UConn has managed this transition impressively, starting the season with a 9-0 record, with most games being won with a significant margin. Fudd believes the team is adapting well. "It's not just one person filling the void; everyone has stepped up," she explained. "Paige did so much – scoring, rebounding, court vision, and leadership. If we keep improving without her, we'll be fine."
In her final season at UConn, Bueckers averaged 19.9 points per game (PPG), 4.6 assists per game (APG), 4.4 rebounds per game (RPG), and 2.1 steals per game (SPG), leading the team to their first national championship since 2016.
Transitioning to the WNBA, Bueckers maintained her impressive performance with the Dallas Wings, averaging 19.2 PPG, 5.4 APG, and 3.4 RPG. The key difference? UConn was dominant while the Wings struggled. Bueckers is now focused on improving the Wings' performance in her second WNBA season.
