Blind Date Review: A Gay Couple's First Meeting and Follow-Up (2026)

Blind Date: 'We didn't share a kiss, but we did exchange Instagram handles, which is pretty much the same thing among gay men.'

Alfie on Sam

What were your expectations?

I was hoping to meet someone sweet and fun who enjoys the occasional meaningful conversation.

First Impressions?

He had a fantastic smile and an inviting energy. Because we were seated at different tables, there were some awkward moments until the manager realized we were actually on a blind date.

What topics did you discuss?

We chatted about differences between American and British slang (you call it a trunk, we refer to it as a boot, etc.), politics, and our personal goals for the year 2026.

Most Awkward Moment?

I shared a rather grim story about a disastrous date where I nearly drowned in the ponds at Hampstead Heath. I thought it was amusing, but he seemed more worried than entertained.

Table Manners?

Sam's table manners were impeccable, while mine were appallingly bad.

What’s the best thing about Sam?

I really admire his commitment to saying yes more in 2026, and it's exciting that he has moved to London for a fresh start.

Would you introduce Sam to your friends?

Absolutely! He was a lot of fun to be around.

Q&A

Interested in a Blind Date?

This segment is part of our Saturday dating column, where we pair two strangers for dinner and drinks, and then they share their experiences by answering a series of questions. Each week, this feature, complete with a photo taken before the date, appears in Saturday's magazine in the UK and online at theguardian.com every Saturday. It has been going strong since 2009, and you can find out more about how we create this feature here.

What kind of questions will I be asked?

We inquire about your age, location, job, hobbies, interests, and what type of person you're looking to meet. If you feel there are additional questions you'd like answered, please let us know!

Can I choose my match?

Not really, as it is meant to be a blind date! However, we do ask you about your interests and preferences. The more information you provide, the better the potential match.

Can I select the photo that gets used?

Unfortunately not, but rest assured, we will choose the most flattering ones.

What personal details will be shared?

Your first name, job, and age will be included.

How should I respond?

Be honest yet considerate. Keep in mind how your responses will read to your date, especially since Blind Date reaches a large audience both in print and online.

Will I see the other person's responses?

No, you won’t. We may edit both your and their answers for various reasons, including length, and might ask for more clarification if necessary.

Can you help me find 'the one'?

We’ll do our best! Who knows? It might even lead to marriage or children!

Can I participate from my hometown?

Only if your hometown is in the UK. Many applicants are from London, but we welcome participants from other regions too.

How to apply?

Just send an email to blind.date@theguardian.com

Describe Sam in three words.

Confident, fun, and irreverent.

What do you think Sam thinks of you?

I can be quite chatty, and I noticed him zoning out at times. Still, he did compliment my personality.

Did you continue the evening elsewhere?

I would have liked to, but then a thick fog rolled in, making it difficult to see what was still open, and Sam had to dash off.

And... was there a kiss?

No, but we exchanged hugs and Instagram follows instead.

If you could change one aspect of the evening, what would it be?

Honestly, I wouldn't change much at all.

Rating out of 10?

I'd give it a solid 7.

Would you like to meet again?

There wasn't a romantic spark for me, but I would definitely like to hang out as friends.

Sam on Alfie

What were your hopes for the date?

I wanted to be surprised and maybe surprise myself in the process.

First impressions?

He was vibrant and outgoing, tall with an amazing smile. Plus, he was punctual, which earns a big thumbs up from me.

What topics did you discuss?

We talked about our dating disasters, reality TV shows, and the types of questions we dislike being asked on dates (for me, it's hobbies; for him, it's music). We also touched on the challenges of navigating your twenties versus the joys of being in your thirties.

Most awkward moment?

Awkwardness is subjective; it only feels awkward if you allow it to.

Table manners?

His manners definitely exceeded my somewhat unrefined American dining etiquette.

Best quality of Alfie?

He's incredibly warm and engaging. Additionally, he asks insightful questions, which is a rare and valuable skill.

Would you introduce Alfie to your friends?

Absolutely, without a doubt!

Describe Alfie in three words.

Energetic, funny, and curious.

What do you think Alfie thinks of you?

I hope he found me amusing, but then again, physical appearance isn't everything.

Did you go anywhere after?

Just to the station.

And... did you kiss?

We followed each other on Instagram, which is basically equivalent in the gay community.

If you could alter one thing about the evening, what would it be?

I wish I had looked at the menu beforehand.

Score out of 10?

An 8 out of 10. The date itself was enjoyable, but it felt more like a friend connection right from the start.

Would you meet again?

Definitely, without hesitation.

Sam and Alfie dined at Nora, located in London, E2 2. Interested in going on a blind date? Email us at blind.date@theguardian.com.
