MMO Roundtable: Celebrating 20 Years of 'GKR' - Our Favorite Gary, Keith, Ron Memories
A Legacy of Laughter and Love for the Mets
It's been two decades since Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Gary Cohen joined forces as the dynamic trio known as 'GKR' on SNY. Despite the Mets' ups and downs over the years, one thing remains constant: the 'GKR' booth is the best in baseball. Through long, boring games and disappointing seasons, they've provided entertainment, camaraderie, and a sense of community for Mets fans. As we celebrate their 20th anniversary, our team shares our favorite 'GKR' memories, from hilarious quips to heartfelt moments.
Mojo Hill: The Unbelievable Bartolo Moment
My favorite 'GKR' moment is one I didn't even watch live, because I was at the game. Gary's sheer disbelief when calling the Bartolo Colon home run was priceless. I can practically recite that call: 'And it's gone! It's gone! It's gone!'
It was a hilarious moment that showcased the perfect blend of humor and enthusiasm for the oddities of baseball. 'GKR' knows how to make the mundane magical, and that's what makes them so great.
David Melendi: The Objective Analyst
I love 'GKR' because they are objective. There are times I keep a lopsided game on just for their banter. Gary reminds me of an orchestra conductor, standing and waving his arms through his call. Ron Darling's insights are equally impressive, providing a well-rounded perspective on the game.
Christian De Block: The Humorous Blunder
One of my favorite 'GKR' moments was when Keith completely butchered the Cardinals defensive lineup. He mispronounced Peter Bourjos and missed the entire infield, but hey, he still managed to mention Yadier Molina at the end! Keith brings a certain sense of humor to the booth that makes us all laugh at home.
Matthew Tutrone: The Unpredictable Quips
We've been blessed by such an abundance of hilarious quips, cerebral insights, and heartfelt moments from these three, that it's impossible for me to choose a single favorite. Now, 20 years into their tenure, these unforgettable moments have become almost routine and expected from them. Yet they always manage to keep the broadcast fresh and entertaining, even during the lousiest of games.
Michelle Ioannou: The Fun with Baseball Cards
Can we talk about when they'd break open packs of baseball cards during long, or really bad, games? That has to be mentioned. Gary Cohen's Bartolo Colon home run call is also one that will live down in infamy. But if I had to pick just one, a funny one, it has to go to the time Keith did a play-by-play of fans partying on the boats near Oracle Park in San Fran. He totally roasted them, and it was way too funny.
A Legacy of Love for the Mets
These three men have brought laughter, camaraderie, and a sense of community to Mets fans for 20 years. Their love for the game and the fans is evident in every broadcast, and that's what makes 'GKR' so special. As we celebrate their 20th anniversary, let's raise a glass to the best booth in baseball and the memories they've created for us all.
