Halifax Panthers: A Second Chance at Glory
The Halifax Panthers are set to make a remarkable comeback, rising from the ashes of their recent liquidation. With a new club formation approved and plans in motion, the team is gearing up for their Championship fixture against the London Broncos at The Shay on Sunday. This is a significant milestone, as the club is now led by the experienced Kyle Eastmond, who previously guided the team through a similar crisis.
However, the Panthers' journey to the field has not been without challenges. Many players who were contracted before the liquidation have moved on to other teams. Notable departures include David Nofoaluma (York Knights), Tanguy Zenon (Huddersfield Giants), Charlie Graham (Hunslet), Jack Hansen (Rochdale Hornets), Tom Inman (Newcastle Thunder), Ronan Dixon (Batley Bulldogs), Bayley Liu (Hunslet), and Brad Day (Oldham). Loan players Myles Lawford and Leon Cowen have also returned to their parent clubs.
This leaves 14 players still free agents: Ben Tibbs, Alfie Johnson, Jesse Soric, Will Calcott, Adam O'Brien, Dan Okoro, Ben Crooks, Owen McCarron, Jacob Fairbank, Connor Davies, Zack McComb, Vila Halafihi, Ben Forster, and Darius Carter. It's important to note that these players are not automatically signed to the club, as new contracts must be renegotiated. Even if they all re-sign, the team may still need additional players to form a full squad for the weekend.
To address this, several Super League clubs have offered to loan players to Halifax, ensuring the team can fulfill its fixture. This collaborative effort showcases the support and solidarity within the rugby league community. With further plans in the works, the Panthers are on track to continue their season, and the future looks brighter than ever.
