I recently embarked on an electric car journey, covering 300 miles in a single day, and it was just as effortless as driving a petrol-powered vehicle. I've been testing the Skoda Elroq, a practical and efficient compact SUV, to see if it's the ideal electric car for beginners. After a few days of smooth sailing around London's suburbs, I put the Elroq's versatility to the test with a long-distance motorway trip, a challenge often faced by electric vehicles due to energy demands and noise implications at high speeds.
My adventure began with an early morning dash to Crewe to catch a glimpse of Bentley's groundbreaking EXP 15 concept. Despite the ungodly hour, I was prepared. I topped up the 82kWh battery the night before, ensuring a reassuring 343 miles of range on the display. As I ventured onto the M25, the range gradually decreased, mirroring my distance traveled. However, once I broke free from the city's restrictive 20mph zones and hit the highway, the range started to fall behind the actual distance covered.
By my first rest stop, I had covered 110 miles but lost 140 miles on the display, with efficiency dropping from 4.3mpkWh in town to 3.4mpkWh on the motorway, resulting in a range of 279 miles. From then on, I kept a close eye on my 'comfort buffer,' the estimated remaining range, as I navigated the busy lanes of Bentley's car park, sandwiched between the mighty Bentaygas and Continentals.
Initial calculations suggested I'd have 106 miles left, but with the air conditioning running to combat the heat, my safety net gradually shrank. I ended up with just 80 miles remaining, carefully maneuvering the Elroq between the powerful Bentaygas and Continentals. This experience highlights the importance of efficient range management in electric vehicles, especially during long-distance travel.
