Get ready for a game-changer in the world of renewable energy! The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project is about to make waves, with wind turbine installation kicking off this month. This massive undertaking, set to generate its first power early next year, is a significant step towards a greener future.
As of November 2025, the project is already 66% complete. Impressive, right? All 176 monopiles and a significant portion of the transition pieces (TPs) are in place. The offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) Charybdis arrived in September and is expected to start loading and installing turbines this month. What's even more impressive is that there are no restrictions on when the turbines can be installed.
Dominion Energy, the owner of both the 2.6 GW offshore wind project and the Charybdis, has revealed that the project is on schedule to begin producing power in the first quarter of next year and to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
This project is not just big; it's huge. CVOW will feature 176 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines. Once operational, it will be the largest offshore wind farm in the US and one of the biggest worldwide, with an installed capacity of 2.6 GW.
But here's where it gets interesting: The project is a joint venture between Dominion Energy and Stonepeak. Stonepeak acquired a 50% noncontrolling interest last year. However, Dominion Energy will retain full operational control.
And this is the part most people miss: This project represents a substantial investment in clean energy.
What do you think about the future of offshore wind energy? Do you believe projects like CVOW are the answer to our energy needs, or are there other factors we should consider? Share your thoughts in the comments!
