A powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, Kirsty Laing's story is a testament to the unpredictability of cancer. This young, healthy mum from Paisley had her world turned upside down when a mild stomach pain led to a stage four bowel cancer diagnosis.
The Unseen Threat
Kirsty, a 34-year-old medical secretary at NHS radiology, had always been fit and rarely unwell. So, when she started experiencing unusual cramping last August, she knew something was amiss. Her GP, after running a series of tests, including blood work, an ultrasound, and a FIT stool test, discovered a high-risk score, indicating a serious condition.
A Race Against Time
Despite reassurance from friends and family, Kirsty's journey became a race against time. Her colonoscopy had to be abandoned due to severe pain, and the preparation for a CT colonoscopy proved gruelling. After a trip to A&E, she underwent two CT scans, and the news was devastating. A large tumour in her bowel had spread to her liver, and it could perforate at any moment.
"It's like a scene from a movie where everything freezes. My world stopped. I thought about my two-year-old son, Max, at home," Kirsty recalled.
A Fight for Survival
Within hours, Kirsty underwent emergency surgery to remove part of her bowel. The weeks that followed were filled with uncertainty as doctors assessed the liver tumour. It was a challenging time, but Kirsty remained strong. She began a 12-week chemotherapy course, and aside from some side effects, she's determined to stay positive.
"You realize how precious life is. I used to complain about going to work, but now I'd give anything to be back at my desk. Every day is a blessing," she shared.
A Call for Action
Kirsty's story highlights a growing concern. Bowel cancer, typically associated with older age groups, is increasingly affecting younger adults. In Scotland, the rate of colorectal cancer in adults under 50 has risen by almost 50% in the last decade. Kirsty has written to her local MSP, George Adam, advocating for a reduction in the bowel screening age to 30, hoping to prevent others from reaching stage four.
"I don't want anyone to go through this. If you feel something is wrong, keep pushing for answers. Don't settle for IBS or dietary issue diagnoses. Your health is worth fighting for," Kirsty urged.
As Kirsty looks forward to returning to her normal life, she encourages everyone to listen to their bodies and seek early detection. Her story is a powerful reminder that cancer doesn't discriminate and that awareness and action can save lives.
