Melbourne neurologist Professor Helmut Butzkueven has been honoured with the 2025 MS Research Award by MS Australia, recognising his two decades of leadership in improving MS care and advancing research. Based at Monash University and Alfred Health, Professor Butzkueven's work has significantly impacted the field, both in Australia and internationally. He is the co-founder and Managing Director of MSBase, the world's largest MS registry, which has over 125,000 patient records. His motivation stems from the people he treats weekly, seeing the unmet need and the challenge it presents. Professor Butzkueven's passion for neurology and immunology, the greatest mysteries in medicine, has driven his dedication to MS research. Through MSBase, he has contributed to shaping treatment guidelines, enhancing real-world evidence, and improving our understanding of MS progression. He also leads international drug safety initiatives, ensuring high-quality care for MS patients. The MS Australia Award holds special significance for Professor Butzkueven, as the organisation is globally respected for its advocacy and research funding. MS Australia CEO Rohan Greenland praised Professor Butzkueven's lasting impact on MS research and treatment, highlighting his leadership in establishing MSBase. The pace of research is promising, with growing interest in the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and its role in MS progression. Professor Butzkueven shares the award with Professor Bruce Taylor from the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. The MS Australia Awards celebrate individuals driving change and progress in the MS community, with recipients including Professor Taylor, MS Nurse and advocate Belinda Bardsley, and the Miles family.
