Just recently, paleontologists made an exciting discovery: new dinosaur fossils unearthed right in the middle of a construction site. On Friday, the team carefully extracted these ancient remains from a parking lot project at the monument in Colorado.
Here's the scoop: on September 16, 2025, construction workers unknowingly exposed a treasure trove when they removed some asphalt, revealing the sandstone beneath. This led to an immediate halt in construction, allowing paleontologists to step in and carefully excavate the fossils.
The team estimates they've recovered approximately 3,000 pounds of fossils and rock. Based on initial assessments, these likely belong to a large, long-necked dinosaur, most probably a Diplodocus, a common sight in the area's ancient bonebeds. The fossils are now safely in the fossil preparation lab at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum in Vernal, where experts will meticulously clean and study them.
And this is the part most people miss: This discovery marks the first fossil excavation in this specific location since the original digs concluded way back in 1924! The find was made near the famous Quarry Exhibit Hall, also known as the "Wall of Bones," the monument's most popular attraction.
