Bajrami setback looms larger than initially feared, as Rangers’ injury woes continue to mount ahead of their Europa League meeting with Ferencvaros.
Rangers boss Danny Rohl revealed that Nedim Bajrami’s muscle issue could be more serious than first thought, delivering a comprehensive four-player injury update on the eve of the Hungarian clash.
Bajrami picked up a knock during the 3-0 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday. Initial assessments suggested it wasn’t too concerning, but a subsequent scan party painted a less hopeful picture, prompting another review to gauge the true extent of the problem.
“Nedim isn’t in great shape for us, and that’s tough to take,” Rohl said as his side prepared to face Ferencvaros. Rangers have only collected one point from five Europa League group matches this season.
At this stage, it appears to be a muscle injury. The striker didn’t feel overly bothered after the incident, but the scan gave no reassurance. A further assessment will determine the trajectory, with a week-to-week timeline the current expectation, though there’s hope the recovery won’t be prolonged.
Rohl pointed to the bigger picture: the squad is stretched, with several players sidelined after a demanding schedule and extensive international duty. Still, he stressed that the group remains capable of coping and finding effective alternatives.
In other squad news, Joe Rothwell will not be part of the travel party to Hungary, Lyall Cameron remains with the squad but faces a late decision, and Dujon Sterling has joined up, aiming for his first appearance since April.
“Joe isn’t with us, Lyall is with us but there’s a big question mark over him—we’ll assess him. It’s a positive sign that Dujon is back in the fold,” Rohl added, underscoring the ongoing uncertainty around several selections while highlighting the team’s continued forward planning.
