Get ready for a big change in the world of TV quizzes! Richard Osman, the beloved host of House of Games, is stepping down after an incredible nine-year run.
Osman, a 55-year-old author and TV presenter, has decided to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series. In a recent podcast episode with Marina Hyde, he announced his departure, saying, "I am leaving House of Games. It will no longer bear my name." He added, "I gladly hand over the keys to someone else's House of Games."
But here's where it gets controversial... Osman's decision to leave House of Games follows a similar move from Pointless, another popular BBC quiz show he hosted. He explained, "With writing, there comes a point where you have to let go." And this is the part most people miss: Osman met his wife through House of Games! Talk about a love story.
Speaking on The Rest is Entertainment, Osman expressed his love for the show and noted that he has completed a whopping 800 episodes. The series, produced by Remarkable Entertainment, has been a staple on BBC Two since 2017, with the ninth series currently airing.
The BBC has confirmed that the show will continue, promising an "incredible team" with a new host. Osman will film his final week, where he'll pass the iconic red armchair to the next host. "I'll be gutted when I stop doing it, but I had to, just like with Pointless," he said.
His podcast co-host, Hyde, thanked Osman for bringing joy to her household. "Looking forward to Su Pollard's House of Games," Osman joked.
Banijay, the production company, confirmed the news, with joint managing director Tamara Gilder promising "exciting plans" for the show, which will be revealed soon. Rob Unsworth, head of daytime and early peak commissioning, praised Osman's contribution, saying, "Richard Osman has established House of Games as one of our best-loved shows. His impact is immeasurable, and we are incredibly grateful for his work over the last nine years."
So, who will be the next host of House of Games? And will they be able to fill Osman's shoes? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below! It's time to speculate and discuss the future of this beloved quiz show.
