Sabrina Carpenter & Franklin the Turtle vs. Trump Admin: When Pop Culture Clashes with Politics (2025)

Sabrina Carpenter Joins Forces with Franklin the Turtle in a Battle Against the Trump Administration

The beloved children's character, Franklin the Turtle, has found himself at the center of an international controversy. The US Defense Department's use of the character in a cartoon depicting the killing of alleged drug traffickers has sparked a heated debate. The publisher of the 'Franklin the Turtle' book series, Kids Can Press, has taken a strong stance, criticizing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth for his social media post that featured the turtle in a military helicopter firing a large weapon. The publisher's statement emphasizes the importance of preserving Franklin's image as a symbol of kindness, empathy, and inclusivity, denouncing any violent or unauthorized use of the character.

This isn't the only instance of artists and their works being co-opted for controversial purposes. Singer Sabrina Carpenter recently faced backlash for her song being used in a video promoting the Trump administration's inhumane agenda of deporting migrants. Carpenter took to social media to express her disapproval, stating, 'Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda.'

The controversy surrounding Franklin the Turtle's depiction in the cartoon comes at a time of increased US military strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats. The Trump administration justifies these actions as self-defense against illicit drug trafficking. However, the publisher's statement highlights the character's values, which directly contradict the violent portrayal in the cartoon. The Pentagon's response was swift, with Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell questioning Franklin's alignment with inclusivity and the kindness and empathy of narco-terrorists.

This isn't the first time artists have faced criticism for their works being used in controversial contexts. In September, Pokémon took issue with the US government's use of their theme song and footage in an ICE deportation raid video. Similarly, British singer Jess Glynne criticized the White House for using her song in a video promoting deportations earlier this year. These incidents underscore the complex relationship between art, politics, and public perception.
