In the heart of the former mining village of Hopkinstown, near Pontypridd, Capel Rhondda stood at risk of being lost to history. Listed as a Grade II historic site, the chapel was put up for sale last year for a mere £47,000. But here’s where it gets controversial: locals feared it would fall into the hands of developers, erasing its rich history and leaving the community without a vital cultural hub. Enter Rhian Hopkins, a local woman with a mission. She launched a crowdfunding campaign that quickly gained global support, raising over £70,000 within days. Her efforts, alongside those of other dedicated campaigners, ensured the chapel’s future would be shaped by the community itself.
Rhian, who attended Sunday school at the chapel in her youth, expressed her pride and gratitude upon receiving the keys: ‘The purchase of Capel Rhondda demonstrates what is possible when people come together. We are so incredibly proud of our community fundraising achievement and grateful for every donation received, from individuals and organizations, near and far. To celebrate this victory, members of the Pontypridd Male Voice Choir performed Bread of Heaven within the chapel’s historic walls—the very place where the hymn was first heard over a century ago. The Welsh Government has also stepped in, awarding a £10,000 grant through its Perthyn scheme to support the next phase of the project. Finance Minister Mark Drakeford, who visited the chapel, shared his sentiments: ‘Hearing the choir perform the hymn in its birthplace was a moving experience. I am proud to support this project through the Perthyn grant, helping to safeguard a building of real historical and cultural significance for future generations, while creating a hub for the whole community, where the Welsh language can be promoted and used.’
But the journey doesn’t end here. Rhian acknowledges the challenges ahead, from securing additional funding to undertaking extensive repairs. Yet, she remains committed to consulting with residents to create a welcoming space that treasures the community’s heritage. The Perthyn grant, which supports community initiatives with the Welsh language at their core, has been instrumental in this endeavor. Since 2022, over 70 grants have been awarded, and Capel Rhondda is the first project in the south Wales valleys to benefit from this expanded scheme.
