The most exceptional horses that never clinched a Group 1 title
It’s astonishing how many gifted thoroughbreds have entered the racing world without ever winning a Group 1 race. Among these, some stand out as truly remarkable. In this exploration, Olivia Kold delves into the stories of these nearly-great champions.
Osborne Bulls
With an impressive record spanning 20 races, this Godolphin runner achieved victory in nine events and astonishingly finished in the top three a staggering 18 times. Notably, he secured five second-place finishes at the prestigious G1 level in various states, competing in high-profile races such as the Doomben 10,000, the All Aged Stakes, and the Newmarket Handicap. His defeats often came by the slimmest of margins, showcasing his competitiveness.
Tom Melbourne
Renowned for his consistent performances, Tom Melbourne is a fan favorite in Australia, particularly for his unfortunate tally of 14 second-place finishes. One of the most memorable moments came when he lost the G1 Kennedy Mile by the narrowest of margins. He also placed among the top finishers in the G1 Epsom Handicap and at Ascot during the G1 Railway Stakes, yet the elusive G1 victory remained just out of reach. Now retired, he enjoys his days alongside Chautauqua at Living Legends, where both horses are celebrated for their achievements.
The Cleaner
This beloved gelding from Tasmania charmed fans by winning two consecutive G2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at The Valley. He had the opportunity to compete in the Cox Plate twice, finishing seventh and ninth in those attempts. At the G1 level, his performances were commendable, with top-four finishes in notable races such as the Australian Cup, Underwood Stakes, and Emirates Stakes.
Pentastic
Trained by David Hall, Pentastic had a successful career with seven wins to his name. However, he became known as a regular placegetter at the G1 level, achieving top-three finishes nine times and placing in the top four on 12 occasions. His consistency in high-stakes races made him a familiar name among racing enthusiasts.
I Am Invincible
Although this horse might not have captured a G1 title himself, his legacy lives on through his progeny. This three-time champion sire narrowly missed out on winning the 2009 G1 Goodwood by just a length. Yet, at stud, he has produced an impressive lineage, siring 17 G1 winners, including the likes of Home Affairs, In Secret, and the ten-time G1 champion Imperatriz, solidifying his impact on the sport.
Royal Creation
Born in 1985, Royal Creation demonstrated remarkable talent as a five-year-old, finishing in the top three in six G1 races, including the Underwood Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes, and Doncaster Handicap. His impressive performance culminated in a third-place finish in the 1991 Caulfield Cup behind the renowned Let's Elope.
